Mobile website design options
Mobile access to the web is growing fast. Users access the web on a range of devices - desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile - with varying screen sizes and capabilities.
Users on the move may not have the same interests and needs as users at their desktops.
Hence the mobile design challenge: should I create separate site/s for mobile users, or make my website work on all these devices?

The solutions: device-specific vs 'one web' design
Building a separate mobile site optimises the design for mobile devices, and allows you to tailor your content for users on the move.
The main disadvantage probably is the extra effort required to maintain separate content. However, if you are using Squiz Matrix or Squiz CMS, you can use their ‘contexts’ feature to construct multiple versions of single assets within the system. This would allow you, for example, to serve up all or a subset of the content of your desktop-optimised website on a separate mobile website, hence reducing the effort of managing separate sites. Read more about contexts in Squiz Matrix.
Alternatively, you can have one site that will work on ‘all’ devices. There are several techniques to achieve this:
- try to cater to any possible screen size with fluid layout (‘responsive design’), or
- build for a sensible preset range of screen sizes (‘adaptive design’).

Building a website to work on all devices
It's already possible to view a website on a browser of any size. However, viewing a site designed for a desktop computer on say, a smartphone, may provide a poor user experience, with excessive zooming and scrolling.
There are a number of techniques to design in a better user experience, from simple liquid width design, to newer techniques utilising CSS3 media queries. Squiz can help you identify your best options, and design and build your site accordingly. Make an enquiry.
